Amethyst

AmethystThe amethyst comes in colors from violet to red-violet and blue/purple. But is mostly found as the purple variety of the quartz family. It has a Mohs hardness of 7. It can be heat sensitive, but it is usually not a problem. It is one of the best selling gems in the world.

Purple has long been considered a royal color so it is not surprising that amethyst has been so much in demand during history. Fine amethysts are featured in the British Crown Jewels and were also a favorite of Catherine the Great and Egyptian royalty. Leonardo Da Vinci wrote that amethyst was able to dissipate evil thoughts and quicken the intelligence.

AmethystAmethyst is mined using underground mining. It is not found in veins but is drift mined and comes in chunks attached to granite. It is mined in: Mexico, Uruguay, Brazil, Canada, Zambia, South Africa and the United States (North Carolina, Maine, Pennsylvania, and Arizona).

AmethystThe name amethyst is derived from the Greek word “amethustos,” or “not to intoxicate.”  According to Greek myth, Dionysus, the God of Intoxication, became infuriated by an insult and swore revenge on the next person to cross his path. Amethyst, a young maiden, was that person.  Goddess Diana acted quickly to “save” Amethyst, turning her into a statue of crystalline quartz.  Dionysus saw the statue and became overwhelmed with grief, spilling out remorseful tears of wine and thus staining the quartz the familiar purple color we see today.

Coming from the Greek word implying sobriety, amethyst was used in Roman times for the treatment of alcholism. In fact, the Romans often made wine goblets from amethyst. The purple hue would give the watered down wine a better appearance and they could drink all night and "magically" not get drunk.

Amethyst Amethyst is thought to boost the immune system by helping blood flow and circulate, allowing the white blood cells to reach sites of infection quickly and efficiently. By cleansing the blood it is said to reduce the symptoms of allergic reactions and the symptoms of chest complaints such as asthma. It may also reduce tension and thus alleviate headaches and make one feel more relaxed.

If you wish to use any of your amethyst gemstones for healing; keep them in a sunny window all day before you start. These crystals will then be much better at healing and helping dispel any negativity in the home. If you place the amethyst gemstones in the moonlight, it will make everyone in your home feel much calmer. Use amethyst during meditation to increase positive feelings.
